Austenitic stainless steel

Austenitic stainless steels are essentially non-magnetic and have high corrosion resistance.
High Corrosion resistance at temp up to 1500°F.
Hardened by cold working.
Face-centered cubic-FCC (fine grain structure).
Possess high impact strength at low temp.
These types of SS are widely used in the process industry and in various industrial applications, and the cookware is also made of austenitic stainless steel.
Types 304, 304L, 316, 316L are some examples of austenitic stainless steels.

Ferritic stainless steel

Ferritic stainless steel has strong magnetic properties and high carbon content, so it is brittle than austenitic stainless steel and has poor corrosion resistance.
Non hardenable by heat treatment.
Body-centered cubic-BCC (coarse grain structure).
Ferritic stainless steel has high resistance to chlorine stress corrosion cracking and is suitable for ships with high chlorine content, petrochemicals, heat exchangers, heating furnaces and other industries.
Types 409, 430, 439 are an example of ferritic stainless steel.

Martensitic stainless steel

Martensitic stainless steel has higher hardness than austenitic stainless steel but has poor corrosion resistance.
Heat treatable to high hardness levels.
Crystal form-distorted structure.
Used in the manufacture of sports knives and multi-purpose tools.
Type 410,420 are an example of martensitic stainless steel.

Precipitation Hardened stainless steel

Precipitation Hardened stainless steel are magnetic and heat treatable to high strength, it has very high strength-to-weight ratio with good corrosion resistance.
Used in the manufacture of aerospace components and springs.
17-7PH, 17-4PH are an example of precipitation hardened stainless steel.

Duplex / Super Duplex stainless steel

Duplex / Super Duplex stainless steels contain both austenite and ferrite in their microstructures.
It offers the advantages of austenitic and ferritic stainless steel
Has good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
It also has high strength and high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
For seawater systems, heat exchangers and structural applications.
EX- UNS S32205, S31803, S32760 are examples of duplex and super duplex stainless steels.
